Wisdom's Second Call

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” has been on my mind since starting reading Proverbs. The Word of God is indeed a path leading to righteousness – a lamp unto our feet (PS. 119:105) or as the Good News Translation says it: Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path. I continue my reading and subsequently continue to be marveled at the greatness of our God.

“My child” or “My son” (depending on the version) is a repetitive phrase in Proverbs. “Kay Arthur advises that one reads the proverbs as if it is God the Father speaking to you, His own dear child whom He wants to show the path of life”. I took it literally and place my name wherever it reads “My child” or ‘My son”. I’ve somehow re-written scriptures – forgive me Lord. Now should you want to read chapter and place your name in the respective verses – it is a powerful exercise.

Proverbs 2 starts with:

Myriam, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure…

Somewhere I may have previously mentioned that I read a lot and I seriously do and somehow information will come back to me about stuff that I’ve read and I find them very helpful. A very well known professor at Dallas Theological Seminary wrote a book called Living By The Book (it’s a classic - highly recommend it). Dr. Hendricks said whenever we read scriptures and find the word ‘if’ – stop and pay close attention. Most the time, ‘If’ is a condition to something ‘else’. Going back to high school days, I recall dealing with what they called conditional statements ‘If - Then’. I decided to look at the ‘if’ statements in these short 4 verses.

If I accept the words
If I store up the commands within me
If I cry aloud for understanding
If I call out for insight
If I look for it as silver or as hidden treasure

So much can be said and the reference to accept the words brings to mind the Parable of the Sower where the ones who accepted the word produced a harvest. Oh and what about Joshua – God told him to not let this book depart from him. The Jews are well too familiar with storing the commands within them – the commands were everywhere. God commanded them to write them on their hands so they wouldn’t forget them. If I may be honest here- I have done a lousy job with respect to the aforementioned. If there’s one thing that I am notorious for – it’s not being consistent. I am still looking for a cure.

What if I accept the challenge from this point on to accept the words and ignore the other voices that want to detour me?

What I choose to hide God’s commands within me and make that a habit from now on?

What If I start crying for understanding as if my life depended upon it?

What if I cry out for insight and rely totally on God? Cry as new-born babes do after the sincere milk of the word.

What if search (seriously) and pray more earnestly and have a serious attitude change? Wanting it far before all the wealth of this world, and laboring in search of it as those who dig in the mines?

Good questions. Where’s the ‘then’ part?

Proverbs 2:5-9

Then I will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Out of God’s mouth will come knowledge and understanding
He holds victory in store for the upright
He’s a shield to those whose walk is blameless
He guards the path of the just and protects his faithful ones
Then I will understand what is right and just and fair and every good path.

That’s a world of promises. Normally, I will be tempted to say they are true for others but not me. He’s faithful even when I am (and have been) unfaithful. He does not lie – nope – He cannot lie. I believe the lies of the enemy about not being worthy or being good enough and yet doubt and question whether the truths and promises of Gods’ words are for me too. Whose voice have I been listening to? God does not call me unworthy therefore leaves the enemy of my soul. I am choosing today to trust – not in a superficial way but to really let God dig out anything and everything that He did not plant in my life.

In Jesus Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3), and He is our wisdom. In Jesus Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3), and He is our wisdom. Thank you Father for opening my eyes to see and my ears to hear. May I be attentive to your voice!

Wisdom’s First Call

On my way to work this morning, I got my iPod ready to listen to pastor Andy Stanley as I do every week. His church is based in Atlanta and I look forward to listen to his sermons via iTunes every week. This morning was no exception. Guess what the message was about? If you say ‘wisdom’ right out of Proverbs 1 -you are absolutely right. Way to go Jesus!

I have read chapter 1 several times using several translations – the Message version was so straightforward that some of its readers might be offended because it refers to one of the three groups addressed in chapter 1 as ‘idiots’. Ouch! On a lighter note, so much can be gleaned from that chapter alone. In fact, should you choose not to read the remaining 30 chapters – you will not be bored for a while.
The first few verses sets the stage for what the rest of the book is about, as noted in verses 2-6, the purposes of Solomon’s proverbs are to:

• Teach people wisdom, discipline
• To help them understand the insights of the wise.
• To teach people to live disciplined and successful lives.
• To help them do what is right, just, and fair.
• To give insight to the simple.
• To give Knowledge and discernment to the young.

There you have it. I hope and pray that God will keep His mighty hand on my beloved 9 year old. Referencing Andy Stanley’s church again – they have one of the greatest children ministries that I know. In fact, children from 1st to 5th grades live by the following three Basic Truths as they call them according what Jesus modeled in Luke 2:52.

• I need to make the wise choice.
• I can trust God no matter what.
• I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

My son knows them and they are used as a grid in just about everything from watching a TV show based on the characters do or say and personally in our life. In fact, if you hang around us long enough – you will hear him say something along the line ‘that wasn’t a wise choice –or I made the wise choice –right Mommy?’ It is my prayer that he continues to reference them and avoid the consequences of what Lady Wisdom warns the three categories of people she finds herself shouting at. Read for yourself how serious she is.

Lady Wisdom goes out in the street and shouts.
At the town center she makes her speech.
In the middle of the traffic she takes her stand.
At the busiest corner she calls out
(The Message -Verses 20-21)

The key verse that I find myself pondering over is “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” 7a. It is essential to begin at the right place in order to gain spiritual insight and wisdom. My desire and hopefully yours too – to be wise we must start with reverence.

Priscilla Shirer in her book ‘He Speaks to Me” takes the verse apart and there’s a nice little exercise that follows.

Ready?

Recall the verse says: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” so she writes:

Fear means ‘reverence’ or ‘respect’
Beginning translates ‘the essence’ and
Knowledge means ‘perception, discernment, spiritual understanding’

Based on these definitions, rewrite the phrase ‘the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”

May God make His face shines upon you as you seek Him!!!

Is Anybody Listening?

I am somehow managing to crawl of the hole that I’ve been hiding in for a while now due to demands on my time that was and still is very taxing. In an effort to remain a bit more devoted to this blog as well as a promised made to new babe in Christ – we will be going through the book of Proverbs together. The month of December is perfect because it has been suggested that one can read a chapter per day and cover the book of Proverbs.

I always love a challenge and I am on to begin a journey as I ponder the truths uttered by the old king – the wisest king –Solomon. Embedded in that precious book are precious gems. These truths contained touch upon some very important areas of the human life such as acquiring and using wealth, making and keeping friends, building a happy home, avoiding temptation and trouble, controlling our feelings, disciplining the tongue, and building godly character.

And so the book opens with: The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel.

The first verse has plenty of references next to it and they were very telling. I find the question that God asks of Solomon very interesting and it is the following:

At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you." 1 Kings 3:5

Whatever – hmm.

It was Solomon’s response that provided us with the very book of Proverbs. Here’s what the king said:

“So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. 1 Kings 3:9

I am impressed. Why? You might ask. I seriously doubt this would have been my response. Really. I could have easily come up with a list. 1. How soon can I quit my job 2. Ideal family life. 3. Not to forget – plenty of cash 4. Removal of fears of any kind. And on and on the list would go. As you can see it’s all about me, myself and I (the other false trinity). Just so you know King Solomon – you were indeed very wise for asking for discerning heart. Had I have one, I could have avoided much troubles, pains, and heartaches. I am grateful for a God of second chances. No – I meant a God of thousand of thousands chances. Indeed very thankful Father that your mercies are new every day.

The story continues…

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, "Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 1 Kings 3:10-12

I love the fact that the Lord was pleased. I want to learn from the heroes of the faith who have gone before me who pleased the Lord. I imagine the Lord smiling or clapping ‘well done Solomon’. How sweet are these words? Jesus once was so please with his disciples when they came back with a report after He had sent them out to preach the good news about the kingdom that He jumped up and down with excitement.

And in response – “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.” 1 Kings 4:29
So much that: He spoke with thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. 1 Kings 4:32. These inspiring sayings or proverbs have much to teach us about God, man, sin, creation, and a host of other topics. The first few chapters introduce to two important ladies: Wisdom and Folly.

Wisdom and folly are personified as women in Proverbs and each has different motives. I am ready to sit at the feet of Lady Wisdom (as wisdom is referred to in the first 9 chapters of Proverbs) as she continues to cry and shout to get our attention. As for Lady Folly- she wants to get us on the wrong path which leads to death. Well- each wants to control our lives, and we must make the choice. After we have committed ourselves to the Lord and His wisdom, we must recognize that there are consequences to the decisions we make.

Speak Lord!!!

‘No Other Gods’ Summer Bible Study

Today is the launch date for a summer Bible study titled “No Other Gods” - at first, I was not going for it and especially when I do not know the author. But when it’s recommended by Beth Moore in addition to being the facilitator- it was well worth a shot. I have other studies going on at the moment (Stepping Up and an in-depth study of Hebrews). Oh man I love the book of Hebrews. It can be read straight through without stopping because it’s just a glorious letter from an unknown author. Come to think of it – not unknown after all but from God.

Getting back to the point – not quite having my book for the study yet and LifeWay has graciously offered the first session and after reading just day 1 of the study – talk about conviction. It's an understatement. God knew I needed this study and for good reasons.

If you had asked if I had if I had any idols in my life –to which I would have said: are you kidding – no ma’am or no sir - not I. But it was evident after reading the author’s definition of what could be considered modern day idols that I have a few in my closets. They are so subtle and that were the danger lies. They are occupying God’s territory in my life. An idol is:

…is something other than God that we set our heart on (Luke
12:29; 1 Cor. 10:19), that motivates us (1 Cor. 4:5), that masters
and rules us (Ps. 119:133; Eph. 5:5), or that we trust, fear, or
serve (Isa. 42:17; Matt 6:24; Luke 12:4-5). … An idol can also be
referred to as a “false god” or a “functional god.

No Other Gods by Kelly Minter p 13.

Enough said. Time for some serious self reflection.

Father God, I will be on my knees before your throne begging you to reveal these creatures (though they take different forms and go by different names) and help me to rid my closets, my mind, and my life of them so that you can take back stolen territories. I stand on tiptoe anticipating your work in my life this summer.

With a heart longing to please you and making You the sole King! Amen.
